Seasonal Storage Operation Supports an Olive Mill in Puglia

A Puglia olive mill paired its 180 kWp solar installation with 100 kW / 215 kWh storage, adapting operation between the intensive harvest season and quieter months.

Two very different operating seasons

The olive harvest kept a mill in Puglia operating around the clock from November through January. For much of the rest of the year, processing demand was low. Its 180 kWp rooftop solar system consequently exported substantial energy during quieter months while the mill faced sharp production peaks during harvest.

The customer needed storage that could serve different purposes over the year: use more solar generation for local loads outside the harvest season and limit grid-demand spikes when the processing line was running.

Dispatch adapted to the mill's calendar

A PowerFac 100 kW / 215 kWh system was installed with metering components. Outside the harvest season, stored solar energy supplied cold-storage and office loads. During harvest, the system supported the brief demand increase when the pressing line started.

The starting event raised facility load from approximately 120 kW to 310 kW for 90 seconds. Storage helped keep grid demand within the mill's 250 kW contracted-power limit. This short power event had a different requirement from storing solar energy for later use.

Project economics

Combined energy shifting and demand-related savings were approximately €31,000 a year. Using only the €34,500 equipment price, the simple-payback estimate is approximately 1.1 years. This excludes the €6,800 connection-related testing and documentation cost and any other installation costs. The connection process took ten weeks.

The storage strategy followed the seasonal business: the same battery served recurring everyday loads in one period and production-start demands in another.

Project FAQ

Questions about this project reference

Configuration, application and operating conditions for this project.

Why did the olive mill change its storage strategy with the season?
During the quieter months, storage shifted surplus solar generation into cold-storage and office loads. During harvest, it helped manage the pressing line's short start-up demand. A single fixed schedule would not reflect both the long low-demand season and the intensive processing period.
How could a 100 kW system help with a 310 kW load peak?
The objective was to keep grid demand within the mill's 250 kW contracted limit, rather than supply the full 310 kW load from the battery. The start-up event lasted about 90 seconds. Storage covered part of the load while the grid supplied the rest, making this principally a short-duration power duty.
What should a buyer compare with the quoted project investment?
The approximately 1.1-year estimate divides the €34,500 equipment price by €31,000 in annual savings. It excludes €6,800 for connection-related testing and documentation, as well as any other installation costs. A whole-project investment comparison needs those costs and the same scope of annual savings.
