A 16.08 kWh Home Battery Combines Evening Supply with VPP Participation

A Brisbane household installed a PowerHom-16F alongside 6.6 kWp of solar, covering 82% of evening-peak electricity use and earning A$612 through VPP participation in 2025.

Moving midday solar into the evening

A Brisbane household with a 6.6 kWp rooftop solar system wanted to make better use of generation produced around midday. Its everyday objective was to supply the home through the 17:30–21:00 evening peak, when solar generation was falling and household demand remained active.

The household also participated in a virtual power plant, creating a second operating opportunity when electricity-market conditions rewarded discharge.

The project used one PowerHom-16F, providing 16.08 kWh at 51.2 V and 314 Ah. The 122 kg floor-standing unit was positioned in the garage and connected to a three-phase hybrid inverter. Its castors allowed two installers to move it into position without a lifting operation.

Routine operation charged the battery during the solar-production period and supplied the home in the evening. VPP control added market-responsive dispatch to this household schedule.

Household and market outcomes

The battery covered 82% of the household's evening-peak electricity use. VPP participation returned A$612 in 2025. During an outage, the project supplied its selected refrigerator, lighting, network and respiratory-device loads for 14 hours.

These outcomes came from the home's particular load selection and inverter arrangement. The case brings together three uses of one battery installation: shifting solar energy, supporting selected loads during outages and participating in aggregated dispatch.

Project FAQ

Questions about this project reference

Configuration, application and operating conditions for this project.

Does installing a PowerHom-16F automatically enable VPP participation?
VPP participation also requires a compatible inverter, communications and an accepted control arrangement with the relevant programme. The Brisbane project combined those elements with a 16.08 kWh battery. The battery's capacity alone does not establish eligibility or access to market payments.
What does the 14-hour backup result include?
It covers the project's selected refrigerator, lighting, network and respiratory-device loads during an outage. It is not a whole-home duration at maximum inverter output. A different load mix, battery starting charge or operating reserve changes the available time.
Are the A$612 VPP proceeds an annual return guarantee?
No. They are the household's proceeds during 2025. Payments depend on the programme, dispatch events, available battery energy and market conditions. A household also needs to balance VPP dispatch with its own evening demand and backup reserve.
