Lithium Starter Batteries Support São Paulo's High-Mileage Motorcycle Couriers
A 180-motorcycle São Paulo courier fleet adopted 12.8 V / 9 Ah lithium starter batteries, recording a 1.1% first-year fault rate in a high-mileage, frequent-start application.

A starter battery used throughout the delivery day
A São Paulo motorcycle courier fleet operated vehicles travelling more than 150 km a day with frequent engine starts. The former lead-acid battery cost BRL 220 and lasted approximately twelve months in the application.
The lithium replacement cost BRL 385, so the customer evaluated it through service frequency and operating reliability as well as the initial price.
A lighter starter installation
The project selected a 12.8 V, 9 Ah lithium configuration with a 260 A cold-cranking specification and IP54 protection. Battery mass was 1.06 kg, compared with 3.2 kg for the previous unit.
The installation included insulation to address heat exposure near the engine and exhaust. Thermal placement was treated as part of the vehicle installation rather than assuming that the same surrounding temperature applied to every battery location.
First-year service experience
After one year, the recorded fault rate was 1.1%. The faults in that period involved loose terminals rather than cell problems. The result made installation quality and connection checks a visible part of the fleet's service experience.
High daily mileage and repeated starting gave the operator a practical basis for assessing the new battery alongside the higher purchase price.
