Lithium Batteries Improve Tour-Cart Availability at a Provence Winery

A Provence winery converted six tour carts to 5.4 kWh lithium packs, reducing battery mass and using lunch-break charging to support guest tours and vineyard rounds.

A guest service with limited charging breaks

A winery in Provence used six open-sided carts for estate tours, tastings and vineyard rounds. The carts' former lead-acid installation required about eight hours to charge, making a short midday break insufficient for restoring useful operating time.

The owner wanted a practical improvement to the guest service: carts available for more tours, with less time tied to a long charging cycle.

A lighter 5.4 kWh pack

Each cart received a 51.2 V, 105 Ah lithium pack, approximately 5.4 kWh. The conversion reduced battery mass by 220 kg per vehicle. The project used 25 A charging and incorporated midday top-ups into the tour schedule.

The same carts also supported evening vineyard rounds, giving the customer uses beyond the daytime guest programme. The battery conversion retained electric operation while changing how the vehicles were charged and maintained.

A purchase driven by service availability

The six-pack purchase totalled €7,440 at €1,240 per cart. The supplied recycling arrangement included an €18 processing charge per unit.

For the owner, the value was primarily the ability to keep the carts available for guests rather than electricity-price savings alone. Charging opportunities between tours fitted the daily timetable of the small leisure fleet.

Questions about this project reference

Configuration, application and operating conditions for this project.

How did short midday charging stops improve tour availability?
The winery used 25 A charging to add energy between tours rather than waiting for the former eight-hour charging cycle. A top-up did not need to restore the pack from empty to full to be useful: it needed to replace enough energy for the next tours. Tour timing and the available charging break shaped the result.
What was the main commercial benefit for a six-cart fleet?
The owner prioritised keeping carts available for guest tours and evening vineyard rounds. With only six vehicles, one cart unavailable for charging could affect the service schedule. The €7,440 battery purchase was therefore evaluated against availability and maintenance needs, not electricity-price savings alone.
