A Financed Starter-Battery Programme Supports Nairobi Motorcycle Riders

A Nairobi programme fitted 260 motorcycles with lithium starter batteries, combining a US$3,328 fleet purchase with monthly rider financing and a ten-month service observation.

Starting reliability affected the beginning of the working day

A programme serving motorcycle riders in Nairobi addressed difficulty starting vehicles during cool, damp mornings. The aim was a reliable start before the rider began earning, alongside a payment arrangement that made the replacement affordable.

The project installed a 12.8 V, 9 Ah lithium starter specification with a 260 A cold-cranking rating across 260 motorcycles.

A battery purchase linked to rider financing

The batteries cost US$12.80 each, with a total purchase value of US$3,328. A motorcycle-finance provider funded the purchase and incorporated the cost into the riders' monthly repayments. The additional payment was US$0.55 per month under the programme.

In the project's 8°C starting test, the motorcycle started on the first attempt in 0.8 seconds. Monthly self-discharge was specified at 2%, supporting the programme's concern about starting after short periods without use.

Ten months of service experience

Three batteries were returned for service during ten months of operation. The issues involved terminal tightening during installation.

The case combines a technical replacement with a route to purchase. Starting performance mattered to the rider, while the financing arrangement and installation experience shaped how the programme could reach a wider group of vehicles.

Project FAQ

Questions about this project reference

Configuration, application and operating conditions for this project.

How did financing affect adoption by riders?
The finance provider purchased the batteries and incorporated the cost into riders' monthly repayments, adding US$0.55 per month under that programme. This changed when riders paid for the replacement. The payment is a project-specific financing term, not a general battery subscription or a current offer for all buyers.
What should be learned from the three service returns?
The three returns during ten months involved terminal tightening during installation. Alongside the successful 8°C starting test, the experience shows that starting performance and installation quality both mattered. A higher cold-cranking rating does not correct an insecure electrical connection.
