A Jakarta Delivery Fleet Reduces Repeated Starter-Battery Replacements

A Jakarta fleet fitted 420 motorcycles with 12.8 V / 9 Ah lithium starter batteries, reducing the average annual replacement frequency from 1.6 to 0.2 per vehicle.

Frequent starts placed pressure on the original batteries

Delivery riders in a Jakarta fleet started their motorcycles more than 120 times a day. Heavy traffic and extended idling complicated battery replenishment, while the previous starter batteries lost reliable performance after approximately eight months.

The fleet manager wanted to reduce recurring battery changes and the associated time lost from delivery work. Standardising the fleet on a single replacement specification also simplified procurement.

A fleet-wide lithium starter conversion

The operator installed 12.8 V, 9 Ah lithium starter batteries with a 260 A cold-cranking specification across 420 motorcycles. The capacity was higher than the former 7 Ah arrangement, while the project focused on the high frequency of daily starting events.

The unit purchase price was US$13.20, giving a total order value of US$5,544. The conversion was implemented across the fleet rather than being limited to individual rider purchases.

Fewer replacements and less lost working time

Average battery replacement frequency fell from 1.6 changes per vehicle per year to 0.2. The operator valued the reduction in downtime at approximately IDR 300 million annually.

The commercial result was driven by vehicle availability. In a delivery operation with frequent stops, the cost of replacing a starter battery includes the interrupted working period as well as the component itself.

Project FAQ

Questions about this project reference

Configuration, application and operating conditions for this project.

Why were frequent starts central to this battery selection?
Riders started their engines more than 120 times a day. The battery had to deliver repeated starting pulses while receiving enough charge between stops. The selected 12.8 V, 9 Ah configuration combined a 260 A cold-cranking specification with greater capacity than the former 7 Ah arrangement; ampere-hours alone would not describe the starting duty.
What does the IDR 300 million annual figure represent?
It was the fleet's valuation of reduced downtime after average replacement frequency fell from 1.6 to 0.2 changes per vehicle per year. It is not a reduction in the original US$5,544 purchase invoice. The value of interrupted deliveries depends on the operator's own utilisation and service costs.
