Lithium Auxiliary Storage Reduces Refrigerated-Truck Idling in Istanbul

An Istanbul logistics operator fitted lithium auxiliary batteries to 28 refrigerated trucks, reducing idling time by 68% while vehicles waited at ports and distribution centres.

Refrigeration had to continue while the truck waited

A refrigerated-transport operator in Istanbul regularly faced six- to ten-hour waits at ports and distribution centres. The refrigeration unit needed power throughout the queue, making engine idling an expensive part of the delivery operation.

The customer added a dedicated battery supply for the refrigeration standby duty, allowing the vehicle's switching arrangement to reduce the time the engine needed to run.

Battery placement away from engine heat

The project specified a 24 V-class, 280 Ah lithium configuration rated at 7.17 kWh. The refrigeration load averaged 1.1 kW in the recorded duty.

The battery installation used an insulated enclosure at the side of the chassis. This separated it from an engine compartment that could exceed 70°C. The battery enclosure remained below 52°C during operation in summer ambient conditions of approximately 38°C. A custom bracket addressed the limited chassis space while retaining 320 mm of ground clearance.

Lower fuel use across the fleet

The project reduced idling time by 68%. Across 28 trucks, annual diesel savings reached 31,000 litres, approximately TRY 1.3 million at the project's TRY 42-per-litre price basis.

This application required more than selecting an energy capacity. Heat exposure, chassis clearance and integration with the truck's power switching all influenced whether the battery could provide a useful standby service.

Project FAQ

Questions about this project reference

Configuration, application and operating conditions for this project.

Does 7.17 kWh cover every six- to ten-hour refrigeration wait?
The stated capacity and 1.1 kW average load do not establish ten hours of uninterrupted battery-only operation. The project integrated the battery with the truck's power switching and recorded a 68% reduction in idling. Waiting duration, actual refrigeration cycling and the available battery charge determine when engine support is still needed.
Why was the battery moved away from the engine compartment?
The engine compartment could exceed 70°C. The insulated side enclosure stayed below 52°C during summer operation around 38°C ambient, giving the battery a different thermal environment. Its bracket also retained 320 mm of ground clearance, so thermal protection had to fit within the truck's mechanical layout.
