One Battery Installation Serves Golf and Community Travel on the Gold Coast

A Gold Coast fleet used 8.2 kWh lithium packs for golf during the day and community journeys in the evening, covering 30 km of daily travel with 38% of the battery charge.

A working day that continued after the final round

A Gold Coast golf course operated 28 carts that served two roles. They carried golfers during the day and were rented to residents for evening community trips, including a 12 km return journey to the beach.

The longer daily duty increased battery use beyond the golf round. The former lead-acid installation lasted approximately eighteen months in this pattern, making replacement frequency a major consideration.

Energy capacity for a combined schedule

The fleet adopted 51.2 V, 160 Ah lithium packs with approximately 8.2 kWh of energy. A 30 km day consumed 38% of the charge in the project's measurement. Batteries were recharged overnight, when the electricity rate was A$0.21 per kWh.

The project used IP65 battery protection. In a high-temperature operating observation, ambient temperature reached 42°C and cell temperature reached 44°C after repeated climbs. The BMS reduced output to 80%, and the vehicle did not experience a protective shutdown during that observation.

A fleet investment for two revenue periods

The battery purchase totalled A$61,040, or A$2,180 per unit. The customer evaluated the investment against frequent lead-acid replacement and the demands of both daytime and evening use.

The dual-use schedule required enough reserve after a golf round for the evening service period, with thermal conditions considered across both duties.

Project FAQ

Questions about this project reference

Configuration, application and operating conditions for this project.

Why did the evening community trips change battery sizing?
The same cart needed enough energy after its golf duties for a further journey, including a 12 km return trip to the beach. The project selected an approximately 8.2 kWh pack and recorded 38% charge use over a 30 km day. Planning around the combined schedule prevented the golf round from consuming the reserve needed for evening rentals.
Does remaining operational at 42°C mean full power was maintained?
No. During the reported hot-condition observation, cell temperature reached 44°C and the BMS reduced output to 80%. The cart avoided a protective shutdown, but available power was lower. Hill-climbing performance and route timing should therefore be considered under the reduced-output condition as well as normal conditions.
