An Expandable Rack Battery System Extends Home Backup in Cape Town

A Cape Town household began with two PowerHom-5R batteries and later added a third, expanding storage from 10.24 kWh to 15.36 kWh and achieving 26 hours of backup for its selected loads.

Keeping everyday household loads running

A household in Cape Town's Table View area experienced irregular interruptions totalling four to ten hours a week, alongside voltage fluctuations. Refrigeration, lighting, connectivity and other selected household loads needed a more predictable supply.

The project began with two PowerHom-5R batteries installed in a 12U, 19-inch cabinet in a utility room. This provided 10.24 kWh at 51.2 V and 200 Ah, paired with a 5 kW off-grid inverter.

A compact arrangement with room to grow

The backed-up circuit included a refrigerator, lights, networking equipment, a television and a pool pump. The project achieved a 15 ms transfer, and a computer remained running during the outage test.

The rack format kept the equipment together in the utility room and supported a later capacity increase. At the end of 2025, the household added a third battery, bringing nominal storage to 15.36 kWh. Each original unit measured 440 × 460 × 166 mm and weighed 45 kg.

Longer support for the selected load group

With the expanded battery arrangement, backup operation for the household's selected loads reached 26 hours. The additional module extended the duration available to the same household application.

The modular arrangement served two stages of the household’s requirement: the initial system met the immediate requirement, while the later addition addressed a longer backup objective. The achieved duration belongs to this load mix and operating pattern.

Project FAQ

Questions about this project reference

Configuration, application and operating conditions for this project.

How much did the later battery addition change the system?
The third PowerHom-5R increased nominal storage from 10.24 kWh to 15.36 kWh. It added energy capacity for longer operation; it did not by itself increase the 5 kW inverter's AC output rating. Expansion also depends on supported module combinations, controls and electrical protection.
Does 26 hours of backup mean every appliance can run continuously?
The 26-hour result belongs to the home's selected loads and their actual operating pattern. A refrigerator, pool pump or television does not necessarily draw its rated power throughout that period. Continuous high-power heating or cooking would create a different energy requirement.
Where did the 15 ms transfer performance come from?
It was achieved by the configured inverter and transfer arrangement using the battery as its energy source. It is not a switching function of the PowerHom-5R module alone. The project test kept a computer running, which describes that tested load and system combination.
