Range had to suit the local route

A courier company in Bogotá operated 180 electric motorcycles on routes with frequent climbs. The project selected a 76.8 V, 50 Ah battery platform to provide 3.84 kWh per pack and cover a working shift in the city's actual operating conditions.

Testing produced 74 km of local range, compared with 96 km in the project's lowland comparison. The local result, rather than the comparison route, determined whether the battery met the courier operation's daily need.

Capacity and state-of-charge behaviour

The batteries used a 24S1P arrangement and Bluetooth communication. Daily temperatures varied from about 20°C to 6°C overnight. The battery-management system included temperature compensation for state-of-charge estimation, with error controlled within 2% in the project's assessment.

The customer also added an insulating liner inside the battery compartment at a cost of US$4 per vehicle. The change reduced compartment temperature under daytime sun by 9°C in the observed conditions.

Nine months of operation and a repeat order

After nine months, average battery state of health was 97.1%; the lowest individual result was 94.8%. The battery price was US$372 per unit.

The first order supplied 180 batteries, followed by a second order for 260. The case connects a higher-energy pack with route-specific testing, state-of-charge behaviour and a modest change to the installation environment.

Which range figure matters for a Bogotá courier route?
The 74 km local test is the relevant starting point because it includes the project's hilly operating environment. The 96 km lowland comparison cannot be transferred directly to Bogotá. Payload, gradients, traffic and the distance between charging opportunities determine the reserve needed for another route.
Did the compartment liner add battery capacity?
No. The US$4 liner changed the installation's thermal exposure; the observed daytime compartment-temperature reduction was 9°C. The pack still had 3.84 kWh of nominal energy. Temperature-compensated state-of-charge estimation and the liner helped the operator manage the existing battery rather than increasing its rating.
